"Freedom or Fire" provides a fairly diverse mix of Dino's riffing
styles. There are spacey, high-noted melodies (Riff A), loose-stringed
sliding (Riffs B and C), the abrasive Demanufacture-esque rhythms (Riffs
J through L), and speedy tremolo picking (Riffs Q and R).
Riff B should be practiced especially before rehearsal. Use your pinky
to slide up to the E (7th fret on the low A string), ring finger to play
the C# (4th fret on the A string), index finger to play the B (2nd fret
on the A string), and the pinky again to play the D (5th fret on the A
string). You are now in position to repeat the riff segment by sliding
back up to E. Try to avoid palm-muting this version so as to keep the
sliding sound loud. Riff H, however, is this exact riff only palm
muted.
Riff J is also a trouble spot. Use your index finger to play the C (3rd
fret on the A string), and middle and pinky fingers to play the
accompanying C#5 chord. Hitting the artificial harmonics right is
tricky but possible with practice. Have fun!
Tune all strings down a perfect fifth (A, D, G, C, E, A)
